Arkadiusz Olech's Projects
Cluster AgeS Experiment (CASE)
The Cluster AgeS Experiment (CASE) is a long term project which main goal is to determine the distances and ages of the globular clusters in our Galaxy using detached eclipsing binaries.
As a byproduct CASE obtains high precision photometry of many thousands stars form several globular clusters. This photometry is used for determination of basic parameters of different kinds of variable stars (RR Lyr, SX Phe, RV Tau and others).
The main results of the project published up to now are the precise determination of the distance and age of Omega Centauri ( Kaluzny et al 2002) and the discovery of the non-radial pulsations in RR Lyr stars ( Olech at al 1999a, Olech at al 1999b)
Comets and Meteors Workshop (CMW)
The Comets and Meteors Workshop (CMW) is an astronomical organization which associates about 40 Polish amateur astronomers. The main goal of the CMW is to coordinate the meteor and comet observations in Poland.
Since 1993 the CMW cooperates with International Meteor Organization (IMO) . Since 1996, the CMW is one of the most active group of meteor observers world wide. Each year the CMW observers make about 2000 hours of visual observations and about 300 hours of telescopic observations.
I am a member of the CMW since 1989. In years 1994-2001 I was the President of this organization and Editor-in-Chief of the CMW monthly magazine Cyrqlarz . Since March 2001 I am Vice President of the CMW and the chief of the visual section of the CMW.
Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE)
The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) is the long term project which main goal is to search for dark matter using microlensing phenomena. The first part of the project was run using 1-m Swope telescope located in Las Campanas Observatory in Chile (years 1992-1996). Since 1997 OGLE has been using 1.3-m Warsaw telescope located also in Las Campanas Observatory. In years 1997-2001 telescope was equipped with 2048x2046 CCD camera. In June 2001 the new mosaic camera containning eight 2048x4096 detectors was installed.
I was a mamber of the OGLE team in years 1995-1998. I spend over two months in Las Campanas Observatory observing for the project. I was involved in construction of the OGLE Catalog of Variable Stars in the Galactic Bulge and analysis of the miscellaneous and RR Lyr variables in the Galactic Bulge.
Additionally, as a side project of the OGLE, I observed dwarf nova V485 Centauri which is the shortest period SU UMa star.
Cataclysmic Variable Stars
In years 1992-1997 I was involved in observing cataclysmic variable stars. We used 60-cm Cassegrain telescope located in Warsaw University Observational Station in Ostrowik (35 km near Warsaw). We observed the following objects:
V1974 Cygni (Nova Cygni 1992) V1500 Cygni (Nova Cygni 1975)
