Workshop on:
"Symbiotic stars, binary post-AGB and related objects"
Wierzba (Mazury Lakes), Poland
18-23 August, 2013
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the workshop on symbiotic stars, binary post-AGB and related objects. The proposed program is aimed at the most important discoveries and future prospects resulting from the ground based projects and recent space missions as well as theoretical modelling related to these binaries.
In particular, the topics we would like to discuss are:
- link between symbiotic and binary post-AGB stars
- mass transfer and activity
- synchronization & circularization
- circumstellar environment
- extragalactic systems
- evolution and chemistry
- relation with SNIa
The program is still open and will be established by the SOC after receiving titles and short abstracts from the participants (see below).
ORGANIZATION
The conference is organized by the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center (http://www.camk.edu.pl/conf/SymbioticStars2013/). It will be limited to about 50 participants. We plan to have no more than 40-50 presentations (invited review talks and contributions) divided into several sessions, and plenty of time for discussions. Poster presentations will be also possible.
The Scientific Organising Committe (SOC):
Valentin Bujarrabal (Spain), Romano Corradi (Spain), Alain Jorissen
(Belgium), Joanna Mikolajewska (co-Chair, Poland), Ulisse Munari (Italy),
Philipp Podsiadlowski (UK), Jeno Sokoloski (USA), Ryszard Szczerba
(co-Chair, Poland).
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC):
J. Mikolajewska, M. Otulakowska-Hypka, R. Szczerba
CONFERENCE SITE AND ACCOMMODATION
The workshop will take place in a resort of the Polish Academy of Science in the Mazury Lakes region which is located 220 km from Warsaw.
The nearest international airport is located in Warsaw, and the easiest way to reach Wierzba is by bus or car. There is regular bus service between Warsaw and Ruciane-Nida (about 10 km from Wierzba); see e.g. http://en.e-podroznik.pl/ for details. There is frequent city train service between F. Chopin (Okecie) airport and the bus station. We will provide later detailed schedules. The nearest railway station is also in Ruciane-Nida, the journey is however much longer and more complicated than by car/bus. We will arrange for transportation from Ruciane-Nida to Wierzba for those who will decide to take the bus/train service. We can also arrange for a conference bus which will leave from the Nicolaus Copernicus Center in Warsaw on Sunday (18 August) early afternoon (~2-3 p.m.) and return to Warsaw (with stops at the Okecie airport & Copernicus Center) after the workshop.
There is no financial support for the participants however we have manged to keep the participation cost as low as possible. The estimated cost of 1-day stay with all meals included is 240 PLN (~60 EUR) in a single room, and 200 PLN (~50 EUR) in a double room.
The dates suggested (18-23 August) are just at the end of tourist season so we can fully enjoy the place. We plan to have lot of time for scientific discussions, and some social events as well. In particular, we plan to organize 1-day canoeing or sightseeing tour to Wolf's Lair (http://www.wolfsschanze.pl/en/turystyka.html), nearby Reszel Castle and Swieta Lipka with its famous baroque organ. The cost will depend on the number of participants, however, it will be no more than about 100 PLN. There is a possibility to stay longer (after 23rd August 2013) in Wierzba to enjoy and explore the greatest mazurian lakes. Please let us also know whether you are interested in such possibility or any other activities after the workshop so we could help to make the necessary arrangements.
PLEASE NOTE: 1 EUR is about 4 PLN

Children 4-12 yrs 100 PLN/night
Children below 4 yrs - free. - Conference bus
Most of participants have expressed their interest in bus from Warsaw to Wierzba leaving from the N. Copernicus Center on Sunday afternoon, and return to Warsaw (with stops at the Okecie airport & Copernicus Center) on Saturday morning (see details on our web page). Please send us as soon as possible your arrival and departure details (flight, time) if you are interested. There is a possibility to have 2 smaller busses on Saturday - one leaving very early in the morning to make your return as convenient as possible. We must know, however, details of your travel to make the arrangements. The N. Copernicus Center will be open for the workshop participants on Sunday 18 August. In particular, it will be possible to drop your luggage there if you arrive early before the bus departure. The bus will be leaving on 3 p.m. from the Copernicus Center (ul. Bartycka 18). - Social events
The whole-day conference tours will be organized on Wednesday 21 August. Based on your preferences expressed in the registration form there will be;
A. The guided sightseeing tour to Wolf's Lair (http://www.wolfsschanze.pl/en/turystyka.html), nearby Reszel Castle and Swieta Lipka with its famous baroque organ. The cost including all entrance fees will be about 100 PLN. There will be a lunch in some restaurant on the way (not included in the fee, choice from menu).
B. 1-day canoeing on Krutynia River. The cost including transportation, canoe (2 participant sharing) and boxed lunch will be about 100 PLN. We plan 2 options for this tour, one easy, for those who do not have much experience, and the second one, more challenging. Details of the two routes will be given later on our webpage.
Some of you have not signed for any of these tours or selected both. If you still want to go to any of these, please let us know as soon as possible.

3rd announcement - July 31, 2013
Dear Participants,
Here are some useful remarks and hints concerning arrival, registration, presentations, etc. The workshop will take place in a resort of the Polish Academy of Science in the Mazury Lakes region which is located 220 km from Warsaw. For details please check the conference web page: http://users.camk.edu.pl/magdaot/wierzba2013/logistics.html
1. Arrival:
The nearest international airport is located in Warsaw, and the easiest way to reach Wierzba is by bus or car. There is regular bus service between Warsaw (Warszawa Zachodnia) and Ruciane-Nida (about 10 km from Wierzba); see e.g.
for details. There is frequent city train service between F. Chopin (Okecie) airport and the bus station (Warszawa Zachodnia). Alternatively, you can take a taxi.
The nearest railway station is also in Ruciane-Nida, the journey is however much longer and more complicated than by car/bus. The only way to reach Wierzba from Ruciane Nida is a taxi.
There will be a conference bus from Warsaw to Wierzba leaving from the N. Copernicus Astronomical Center (NCAC) on Sunday afternoon, and return to Warsaw (with stops at the Okecie airport & NCAC) on Saturday morning (details will be announced during the meeting). The N. Copernicus Astronomical Center will be open for the workshop participants on Sunday 18 August. In particular, it will be possible to drop your luggage there if you arrive early before the bus departure. The bus will be leaving on 3 p.m. from the NCAC (ul. Bartycka 18). Those who are interested in the conference bus, and have not yet send us their arrival and departure details (flight, time) are requested to do it as soon as possible. The distance from Warsaw Chopin (Okęcie) Airport to the N. Copernicus Astronomical Center is approx. 10 km. The best way to get from the Airport to NCAC is by taxi. At the airport take a taxi from those waiting outside the arrival hall (they must have a name of the taxi company and a phone number). We recommend SUPER TAXI which can be found at the TAXI stop next to the exit from the ARRIVAL TERMINAL A, or contact the people at the SUPER TAXI Stand at the ARRIVAL TERMINAL A. They accept VISA and most other credit cards. DO NOT ACCEPT any offers from people inside the arrival hall. Taxi will take 20-30 min and should cost about 30-50 PLN (1 Euro is about 4.2 PLN). Additional information on how to get to NCAC can be found here:
https://www.camk.edu.pl/en/about/guests/
2. Registration for the Workshop & Welcome Reception:
Registration and welcome reception will take place on Sunday, 18 August starting from 19:30, at the restaurant of the Polish Academy of Sciences resort in Wierzba.
3. Payments:
It is possible to pay with credit card (VISA) in the hotel in Wierzba, however cash is required to pay for the excursions. Please note that there is no bank or any exchange possible in Wierzba. The nearest ATM is in Ruciane Nida (~10 km away). Therefore we recommend to get some Polish currency at the airport.
4. Presentations during the Conference:
The preliminary version of the program can be found on the conference web page: http://users.camk.edu.pl/magdaot/wierzba2013/programme.html The time allocation is still provisionary, and may be changed. Please check our web site before the conference to follow the updates. The booklets with the final program and the abstracts will be available at the registration.
We would like to avoid the hassle (and waste of time) of changing laptops between presentations, so please use the conference equipment for your presentation. In particular, those of you who will be giving an oral contribution in a session, are kindly asked to pass their presentation (.pdf or .ppt format) to the LOC member in charge NOT LATER than during the break preceding your session.
5. Internet:
During the conference wireless Internet will be available at the meeting place.
