Group meeting 2009
The workshop will be organized following the tradition
of group meetings we have been having for the last few years. The organization
will be as informal as possible, with a few talks (mostly by PhD students) in
the mornings and afternoons left free for discussions and work on current
projects.
Dates
The meeting will start on Monday, June 29 in the
morning and end on Friday, July 3 in the afternoon. The participants are
expected to arrive on Sunday, June 28 and leave on Saturday, July 4.
Place
The workshop will take place in a historical complex
of the palace in Jablonna near Warsaw which includes the palace itself, the
historical hotel building and a large park. Jablonna is easily reachable by
taxi from the Warsaw airport. Twenty four rooms (some of them double) have been
reserved for the participants in the hotel. The hotel rooms will be available
from noon on Sunday, June 28 and should be left by 10 am on Saturday, July 4.
The talks will be held in a large conference room on the first floor of the
hotel building. A second, smaller room for up to 10 people will also be
available next to the conference room. Coffee and tea will be served during the
break between the talks right outside the conference room. The barbecue party
will take place outside near the palace or in the restaurant (if the weather is
bad). The conference dinner will be served in one of the palace rooms.
How to get there
The name and address of the place is:
Dom Zjazdow i Konferencji Polskiej Akademii Nauk
Modlinska 105
05-110 Jablonna
Tel./fax: (+48 22) 782 44 33, 774 48 62, 782 54 89
Make sure to
have the address with you to show it to the taxi driver. In principle one can
get to Jablonna by bus but this requires a few changes on the way so is not
practical. Taking a taxi should be the simplest way to get there. The cost on
Sunday will be around 180 zloty (=40 euro) from the airport (31 km), less from
the central train station (22 km). If you travel by plane you will find the
taxi stand right outside the arrivals hall of the terminal. There is also one
near the central train station (follow the TAXI signs). DO NOT take any taxi
offered to you by some people on your way out or with only a taxi sign on it.
Use only taxis belonging to companies: they should have names and telephone
numbers painted on them and pricing listed on the windows. The best is to use
white cabs belonging to MPT Taxi with phone number (+48 22) 19191 (ELE Taxi,
tel. (+48 22) 811 11 11 and SAWA Taxi, tel. (+48 22) 644 44 44 are also
ok). Taxis should be waiting at the stand, if there are none just wait a little
or call to order a taxi or look for their desk at the arrivals hall of the
airport. There should be no problem to get a receipt from the driver. In
principle the drivers should accept credit cards but may insist on cash. It may
therefore be best to get some cash at the ATM machine at the airport. There are
also places where you can change money but they may be closed on Sunday.
By car from
Copernicus Center: follow Czerniakowska and then Wislostrada north, along the
left bank of Wisla. After you pass the Olimpic Center on your right turn right
onto the Grot-Rowecki bridge. After crossing the river take the exit on the
right. It will divide into two branches, take the left one for Bialoleka. Go
straight ahead for about 10 km following Modlinska until Jablonna starts, then
turn left on the first lights. This will still be Modlinska and the park of the
palace will start on your left. Turn left into the main gate right in front of
a white church. Go straight ahead until you see the palace. When you are facing
the palace the hotel building is on your right.
Cash and shopping
The present exchange rate is approximately: 1 euro =
4.5 zloty. The ATM machines are generally easy to find. There are some at the
airport, at the train station and in Jablonna. While in Jablonna just go out of the
park by the main gate, turn left into Modlinska street and then right into
Zegrzynska street. There are a few ATM machines along the right hand side of
this street, one in the Kaufland supermarket, where you can also do some
shopping.
Meals
Buffet-style meals will be served for all participants
in the restaurant of the palace. Breakfasts are included with the price of the
hotel room. Lunches and dinners have been ordered separately. For lunch there
will be a choice of meat or fish, vegetables, salads and desserts; for dinner there
will be a selection of cold meats and cheeses, salads and hot dishes. With
lunch and dinner only water will be served. Other drinks are not included and
can be bought at the restaurant at any time.
Support
Some financial support will be available to cover
local expenses and travel costs. We have received an ESF grant, the workshop
will also be supported by the collaboration LEA Astronomie France-Pologne.
Topics
The presentations and discussions will focus on the following issues:
·
Semianalytical description of galaxies in the Local
Group
·
Accretion and merging versus tidal stripping in the
Local Group
·
Properties of dwarf spheroidal galaxies formed by
tidal stirring
·
The missing satellites in warm dark matter scenarios
·
Modified gravity as a solution of the missing
satellites problem
·
Dwarf galaxies in voids
·
The mass and anisotropy profiles of galaxy clusters
from the distribution function
·
The origin of radio emission in galaxy clusters
·
The density-velocity relation in the local universe
·
Near-field cosmology as a tool to constrain
cosmological parameters

List of participants
Note: if
your status is confirmed it means that I have received the filled registration form
from you. Travel support: if the note near your name says YES-LEA it means that
your plane ticket will be covered by the LEA Astronomie France-Pologne
collaboration and the payment will be taken care of by the French side. If the
note says YES it means that the price of the ticket will be reimbursed to you
from a Polish grant while you are in Poland or after the workshop. In order to
do this we will need a receipt for the ticket, the ticket itself and the
boarding pass (the second one to be sent later). If at all possible, our
administration would appreciate if the ticket receipt could state Nicolaus
Copernicus Astronomical Center, Bartycka 18, 00-716 Warsaw as the
ticket buyer. Taxis and local bus tickets will not be reimbursed.
